In a Birmingham basement, two hitmen, Ben and Gus, await their next assignment—but their downtime is interrupted when the dumbwaiter at the back of the room mysteriously starts moving.
Written by British author Harold Pinter in 1957, this one-act play delivers a gripping mix of absurdity and suspense. With its unique dramatic style, The Dumb Waiter offers a thrilling departure from traditional absurdist theatre. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience!
Additional info
Director Medeea Anton has a predilection for absurdist theater and stark aesthetics. In her The Dumb Waiter light, sound and floating decor paint a suspended picture of absurdity, tied together by a striking color palette.
Harold Pinter (b.1930) was the only child from a East Europe working class Jewish family. His father was a tailor in Hackney (East London), and he went to RADA to train as an actor, but hated it. He left without finishing the course. During the 2nd world Blitz in London he was evacuated as a small child to Cornwall. Later, while touring Ireland with a crazy Shakespeare company he started writing plays. He was a very good actor, who also wrote plays. He refused to do National Service, as a conscientious objector and fined 2 times. Deeply influenced by the theatre of the absurd.. One of his first plays “The Dumb Waiter” has 2 criminals waiting for orders in a cellar from above. The orders come, but the conclusions are shocking.
